Winter Energy Saving Tips

Keeping warm and saving on energy costs are big concerns this winter. Having your home’s heating system serviced is a smart way to plan for a trouble-free startup when the weather turns cold. With dirt and neglect as the No. 1 causes of heating and cooling system failure, routine maintenance helps keep your system at peak performance and prevent premature breakdowns.

Natural Gas remains the best home heating value because of energy efficiency, comfort, and reliability. Reducing air leaks could cut as much as 10 percent from an average household’s monthly energy bill. For example, homeowners can seal leaks around doors, windows, and other openings such as pipes or ducts, with caulk or weather stripping.

Use energy wisely by setting your thermostat between 65 and 72 degrees during the winter and at 58 degrees when away from the house for more than a few hours. While sleeping, add an extra blanket for warmth. Bear in mind that warmer temperatures are recommended for homes with ill or elderly persons or infants. Turn down thermostats automatically without sacrificing comfort by installing an automatic setback or programmable thermostat.

Seven Ways to Save Big

  1. Adjusting thermostat by 10 to 15 degrees can cut annual heating and cooling bills by as much as 10 percent.
  2. Change or clean furnace filters once a month during heating season.
  3. Warm air rises. Use registers to direct warm airflow across the floor.
  4. Close vents and doors in unused rooms and close dampers on unused fireplaces.
  5. Set water heater temperature at 120 degrees.
  6. Install water-flow restrictors in showerheads and faucets.
  7. Open draperies and blinds on sunny days. Close them at night to insulate against cold air outside.
