Installing and Programming your Thermostat
If you received an energySMART programmable thermostat as a part of our 2009-2011 program, you need to make sure it is properly installed and programmed in order to save as much energy as possible. Some tips for installation and programming are below:
Installation Tips
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.
- This is a low voltage wiring installation, so be sure to shut off your electricity during installation.
- Install on an interior wall, away from any heating or cooling vents and other sources of heat or drafts.
- If you're replacing a thermostat that has a mercury switch, be careful not to break the tube that holds this toxic substance. Do not place an old unit containing mercury in the trash. Contact your local recycling center or waste management authority for advice on properly disposing of any mercury.
- Call White Rogers at 888-725-9797 with additional questions about mercury recycling.

Maximizing your Programmable Thermostat
- Keep the temperature set at energy-saving levels for long periods (8+ hours) and aim for temperature changes of at least seven degrees between time periods for maximum energy savings.
- Avoid using the override or "hold" function frequently or for long periods. If you use this function frequently, consider adjusting your settings to better suit your family's lifestyle.
- Avoid adjusting the temperature to extremes to heat or cool a space quickly. A programmable thermostat is designed to begin heating or cooling in advance of a set time to reach the desired temperature by the set time.
- Don't forget to replace the batteries. Consider changing your batteries when you adjust your clocks for daylight savings time in the spring or fall.
