Elizabethtown Gas Donates $150,000 in Energy Assistance Grants to Help Low-Income Elderly Seniors to Receive New or Refurbished Heating Systems

March 4, 2005

UNION, NJ. – March 4, 2005 – Elizabethtown Gas, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based AGL Resources (NYSE:ATG), distributed grants totaling $150,000 to four New Jersey social service organizations on Friday, March 4, 2005 at its first AGL Resources Private Foundation Energy Assistance Grant Presentation luncheon. The grants are intended to provide new or refurbished heating systems to low-income seniors in the state.

“We all know that many seniors in New Jersey have had trouble this winter with their heating systems,” said Hank Linginfelter, president of Elizabethtown Gas and senior vice president of AGL Resources Mid-Atlantic Operations. “Recognizing this problem, we decided that one of the best ways Elizabethtown Gas could give back to the community would be to help senior citizens receive reliable heat that they otherwise couldn’t afford.”

“Giving to the local community is something we’ve planned and promised to do since AGL Resources acquired Elizabethtown Gas late last year,” added Linginfelter. “We made a careful study of where we can make a significant impact and are pleased to present grants totaling $150,000 today to the New Jersey State Department of Community Affairs and three local social service agencies in our service territory.”

The luncheon, at the company’s headquarters in Union, New Jersey, brought together leaders from the state, local community and the following agencies, which were awarded the 2005 grants in the following amounts:

  • $20,000 - The New Jersey State Department of Community Affairs
  • $30,000 - NORWESCAP serving Hunterdon , Morris, Sussex, and Warren Counties
  • $45,000 - The Puerto Rican Action Board serving Middlesex County
  • $55,000 - PROCEED Inc. serving Union County
The grants were awarded based on the percentage of customers Elizabethtown Gas has in each of the counties where the agencies also provide service. In operation since 1855, the company distributes natural gas to 260,000 customers in parts of Union, Middlesex, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Morris and Mercer counties.

“As New Jersey’s Ratepayer Advocate, I see first-hand how our residents need help with meeting the cost of even the basic necessities of utility service,” said Seema M. Singh, Ratepayer Advocate, State of New Jersey. “It is extremely important that there be continued momentum in the awarding of energy assistance grants and private and public sector initiatives that give back to the community to help ensure that the neediest residents of our state do not have to choose between heat and other utilities.”

Elizabethtown Gas was acquired by AGL Resources on November 30, 2004. AGL Resources and NUI, the former parent of Elizabethtown Gas, had requested expedited approval to close the transaction prior to year end - before the peak of the winter heating season.

AGL Resources fosters a strong commitment to community service through Elizabethtown Gas and its other subsidiaries. In addition to improvements in their natural gas service, Elizabethtown Gas customers should also expect to see strong involvement in community activities by the utility and its employees.
