Elizabethtown Gas To Present A $20,000 Grant To Elizabeth High School

December 15, 2005

UNION, N.J., Dec. 15, 2005 – Elizabethtown Gas, a subsidiary of AGL Resources (NYSE: ATG), will present a $20,000 corporate grant to Elizabeth High School at tonight’s 7 p.m. regular monthly meeting of the Elizabeth Board of Education at 500 N. Broad St.

“Elizabethtown Gas is pleased to present this $20,000 corporate grant to Elizabeth High School,” said Don Carter, vice president of Elizabethtown Gas. “Giving to local communities in New Jersey is something we planned and promised to do since AGL Resources acquired Elizabethtown Gas late last year. Generosity of spirit is one our core values and education is one of our primary giving areas.”

Carter is expected to present the check to Pablo Munoz, superintendent of the Elizabeth Public Schools. Munoz, in turn, is scheduled to present Carter with a resolution from the district recognizing the work Elizabethtown Gas is doing to mentor students at the high school.

“Elizabethtown Gas employee volunteers are providing the kind of support I needed to earn Scholar-Athlete recognition and graduate near the top of my class at Elizabeth High School in 1987,” said Munoz. “I was able to go to Yale University, later earn my master’s degree from Columbia University, and return home to Elizabeth to serve as superintendent of schools. It is my hope that my story and the mentors from Elizabethtown Gas will demonstrate and motivate the students to dream and have the confidence and life skills to succeed.”

This past summer and throughout 2005-2006, Elizabethtown Gas is providing 24 employee mentors as "real world" support for Elizabeth High School and personal motivators for individual students. Modeled after the AGL Resources volunteer project at Parkside Elementary School in Atlanta, the program was suggested by AGL Resources as part of a settlement with the New Jersey Attorney General during the November 2004 purchase of Elizabethtown Gas and other properties owned by NUI Corp. In addition to the mentoring project, the agreement included four summer internships and a total of $40,000 in corporate grant money from Elizabethtown Gas -- $20,000 in 2005, $10,000 in 2006, and $10,000 in 2007.

“AGL Resources views this kind of community work and involvement as an opportunity,” said Carter. “It is our hope that this mentoring program will become a model for how to mentor students in a large urban high school environment. We have high expectations that this program will exceed the Attorney General’s guidelines and establish a lasting successful program between Elizabethtown Gas and Elizabeth High School.”

Tonight’s $20,000 grant from Elizabethtown Gas to Elizabeth High School will provide:

  • A Teacher Incentive Program to fund teacher appreciation activities as needed and a staff end-of-year luncheon;
  • Agreed-upon field trips for students for interactive and hands-on learning;
  • An Awards Incentive Program to recognize students in the program for improved academic achievement;
  • A Perfect Attendance Incentive to fund a celebration every 20-day period to reward students for perfect attendance; a larger incentive would be scheduled at the end of the school year.
  • A career day and a college outreach program during the first quarter of 2006.
