Ezekiel “Zeek” Taylor, March of Dimes national ambassador kickoffs the Walk America campaign at Elizabethtown Gas Company

March 2, 2007

UNION, N.J. - Mar. 2, 2007 - To support programs to prevent birth defects and reduce infant mortality, Ezekiel “Zeek” Taylor, the 7-year-old March of Dimes national ambassador, joined Elizabethtown Gas employees to kick off the Union County Walk America campaign on Feb. 26. The county-wide walk-a-thon will take place on April 29, 2007 at Nomahegan Park in Cranford.

“Ambassador Taylor plays a vital role in the March of Dimes’ efforts to save babies and we are proud to have the ambassador visit Elizabethtown Gas for the second year in a row,” said Don Carter, vice president of Elizabethtown Gas. “That kind of team work and support is essential as the March of Dimes continues to be a strong advocate for unborn and newborn babies.”

Each year the March of Dimes selects a child, who was helped by the organization’s research programs or educational campaigns, to serve as the national ambassador. Zeek was born severely premature, weighing only 1 lb., 14 oz. Research funded by the March of Dimes helped doctors develop medical technology that saved Zeek’s life. Today, Zeek is healthy and happy to join Elizabethtown Gas in support of the March of Dimes’ mission to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality.

Walk America is the March of Dimes’ largest annual fundraiser. As a major sponsor of this event, Elizabethtown Gas supports Ambassador Taylor’s efforts to increase awareness of the effects of premature birth which has increased by more than 30 percent in the United States since 1981. In 2006, the Walk America campaign raised $150,000 research and medications used to treat premature babies. The 2007 goal is $155,000. The research funded by the March of Dimes results in medical practices that have now become the standard in treating and preventing premature births.
