Education grants reinforce Elizabethtown Gas’ commitment to education May 28, 2009
Union, N.J. – May 28, 2009 – Elizabethtown Gas, a subsidiary of AGL Resources Inc., announced today over $20,000 in grants, to be funded by the AGL Resources Private Foundation, to support educational programs in New Jersey. The AGL Resources Foundation supports non-profit entities through various grants, community outreach programs and other corporate charitable giving programs.
“Education is a key area of interest to our company.” said Don Carter, vice president, Elizabethtown Gas. “We are pleased to provide scholastic opportunities for students in the community.”
The donations will be used to fund college scholarships, institute new curriculums, prepare students for the SAT and implement mentoring programs.
Elizabethtown Gas has already developed a successful high school and middle school site-based mentoring program for several schools in the community. The goal is to help at-risk students stay in school and finish their high school education. The progam offers summer internship programs for qualified high school students.
“The Elizabethtown Gas Mentoring Program changes lives!” said Stephanie Rogers, guidance counselor, Elizabeth High School. “This program has helped our students succeed. Their experiences have been very positive. The program is inspirational.”
The students meet weekly with their mentors during their lunch periods starting in late October through early May. Students involved in the program get to attend cultural events, have access to internships and the possibility of future employment within the company.
“We believe a strong education paves the way for students to reach success in their careers. Elizabethtown gas is proud to help them along that path.” said Carter.
