The dynamic duo: Heating assistance and energySMARTElizabethtown Gas shows customers the way to energy savings and comfort this winterOctober 23, 2009
Union, N.J. – October 23, 2009 –As temperatures drop, thermostats go up, and monthly heating bills rise. Elizabethtown Gas would like to educate consumers on two money-saving initiatives designed to reduce their monthly energy bills through the winter season and beyond.
The first involves federal energy assistance funds available to qualified customers through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program or LIHEAP. This program offers a one time payment of a resident’s monthly heating bill and is administered by the New Jersey Department of Social Services.
“LIHEAP funds are available to qualified residents every year,” said Don Carter, vice president, Elizabethtown Gas. “These funds are obtainable for the home’s primary heating energy source, such as natural gas, electric, propane or fuel oil.”
The application process opens Nov. 2, 2009, and is available for applicants who have a yearly household income less than or equal to 225 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, published each year by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. To determine eligibility and apply for the program, residents should contact the Department of Social Services in their community.
The second initiative is called energySMART. It’s a new Elizabethtown Gas energy conservation program working in conjunction with the New Jersey Clean Energy Program. EnergySMART offers customers free programmable thermostats and weatherization kits, along with a variety of appliance rebates.
“Combining energySMART initiatives with LIHEAP funds can provide customers with the tools and knowledge they need to lower their heating costs, save energy and stay warm this winter,” said Carter.
Additional information on LIHEAP and energySMART can be found on the Elizabethtown Gas website at www.elizabethtowngas.com.
