Warm up to winter temperatures with Elizabethtown GasCombining heating assistance and energySMART initiatives can help customers save moneyOctober 28, 2010
UNION COUNTY, N.J. – October 28, 2010 - With the freezing temperatures of winter right around the corner, Elizabethtown Gas wants to ensure customers are informed of where they can receive help paying and ways they can reduce their monthly heating bills.
The first involves federal funds available through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program or LIHEAP. This program offers a one-time payment to a resident’s monthly heating bill regardless of the energy source used in the home.
The LIHEAP application process opens November 1 and is available to people who have a yearly household income less than or equal to 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, published each year by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. To determine eligibility and apply for the program, residents should contact their local county LIHEAP office. Call 1-800-510-3102 for locations.
“LIHEAP funds are available to qualified residents and can help offset the costs of heating a home in the winter,” said Don Carter, vice president, Elizabethtown Gas. “Residents who live on a fixed income should not have to choose between paying for food, medicine or heat.”
Customers can also save money when they participate in energySMART, an Elizabethtown Gas-sponsored energy conservation program designed to help consumers reduce their energy usage. The program works in conjunction with the New Jersey Clean Energy Program and offers customers a variety of incentives once a home energy assessment has been performed by a BPI certified contractor. Fees for the assessment vary depending on size of home and services performed. Once the home assessment is completed, customers can receive a free programmable thermostat and weatherization kit, along with a variety of appliance rebates up to $1,300.
“Our company is committed to providing our customers with tools they need to lower their heating costs, save energy and stay warm this winter,” said Carter.
