Elizabethtown Gas awards more than $100,000 in energy assistance grants

UNION, NJ – Oct. 16, 2013 – Elizabethtown Gas has awarded energy assistance grants totaling more than $100,000 to five nonprofits in its service territory to supplement a portion of New Jersey residents’ home heating costs and to support projects that promote energy conservation and efficiency.

The energy assistance grants were awarded to NJ SHARES, Puerto Rican Association Human Development (PRAHD), Northwest NJ Community Action Program (NORWESCAP), Union County Puerto Rican Occupational Center for Education Economic Development (PROCEED) and United Way of Greater Union County.

“Each year Elizabethtown Gas donates grants to state-approved agencies for energy assistance in our service area,” said Brian MacLean, the company’s vice president of operations. “These gifts not only reflect one of our core values – generosity of spirit – but they reemphasize our commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of people in the communities we serve.”

During the last six years, Elizabethtown Gas, through the philanthropic arm of its parent company AGL Resources, has distributed more than $700,000 in energy assistance grants to nonprofits such as NJ SHARES, which partners with more than 260 organizations statewide to help pay the energy and utility bills of households in need.

NJ SHARES relies in part on the generosity of Elizabethtown Gas customers who, this year alone, provided $25,000 in funds through voluntary donations on their gas bills. To donate or apply for the NJ SHARES program, call 1-866-NJSHARES (1-866-657-4273) or visit the website at www.njshares.org.

“We are very grateful to Elizabethtown Gas. The company continues to demonstrate its long-term commitment to New Jersey customers by ensuring an emergency fund is available to help qualifying households stay safe and warm as we head into the colder months,” said Jim Jacob, president and CEO of NJ SHARES. “Together we have been able to help thousands of New Jersey households with their energy bills.”
