Elizabethtown Gas receives approval to increase safety-related investments in pipeline infrastructure

UNION, NJ – Elizabethtown Gas, a subsidiary of AGL Resources Inc. (NYSE: GAS), announced today that it has received approval from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to implement its Accelerated Infrastructure Replacement Program (AIR) to continue its investment in the natural gas pipeline system.
By approving the AIR program, the BPU authorized Elizabethtown Gas to spend an additional $115 million over the next four years to accelerate the rate at which the utility will replace bare steel and cast-iron gas pipelines. The modernization plan supports Elizabethtown Gas’ ongoing mission to provide safe and reliable natural gas service.
“Our accelerated infrastructure replacement plan will allow us to modernize our distribution system by taking a risk-based approach to identifying some of the older mains and services for replacement,” said Brian MacLean, vice president of operations for Elizabethtown Gas. “The newer, more durable pipeline materials will make our natural gas system even safer and more reliable.”
The program serves as an extension of Elizabethtown Gas’ infrastructure replacement, reinforcement and expansion program, which began in 2009. During the last two years, the company replaced nearly 100 miles of natural gas pipe and created approximately 170 engineering, design and construction jobs statewide.
While the infrastructure projects will have no an immediate impact on customer rates, the BPU has authorized Elizabethtown Gas to make these needed investments and defer cost recovery until the company’s next rate case, which will be made no later than September 1, 2016.
“Since 2009, we have invested more than $100 million in critical infrastructure projects to improve safe operations of our distribution system,” said MacLean. “This project will help invest in the future of New Jersey by supporting the state’s economic and environmental goals, while providing customers with the energy source they depend on – abundant, American and affordable natural gas.”
