Elizabethtown Gas receives approval on storm mitigation and system reliability program

UNION, NJ. – July 24, 2014 – Elizabethtown Gas, a subsidiary of AGL Resources (NYSE: GAS), received approval from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to implement its ENDURE (Elizabethtown Natural Gas Distribution Utility Reinforcement Effort) program. The BPU authorization allows the company to invest up to $15 million over the next year to proactively protect and strengthen its natural gas distribution infrastructure and enhance communications capabilities during future extreme weather events.
The approval allows Elizabethtown Gas to replace 12 miles of low-pressure cast iron mains and relocate approximately 600 natural gas meters in Federal Emergency Management Agency-designated flood zones in the areas of Cranford, Carteret, Elizabeth, Perth Amboy, Woodbridge and the Tremley Point section of Linden.
The plan is a response to the BPU’s request to New Jersey’s utilities to build greater resiliency into their systems against severe weather events, such as Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Elizabethtown Gas also plans to reinforce equipment at three gate stations and its liquefied natural gas facility in Elizabeth for flood protection, as well as upgrade its communications efforts to keep customers informed before, during and after a storm hits.
It is expected that the majority of the infrastructure projects will be completed next year.
“ENDURE is designed to protect and shore up our natural gas distribution system in the event we experience an unprecedented storm such as Superstorm Sandy in the future,” said Brian MacLean, vice president of operations for Elizabethtown Gas. “In addition to our current infrastructure modernization program known as Accelerated Infrastructure Replacement (AIR), ENDURE is vital in meeting our obligation to ensure that we provide natural gas to customers in the safest, most reliable manner.”
