Elizabethtown Gas Refunds Provide Additional Savings to Natural Gas Customers

UNION, NJ – Dec. 30, 2014 – At a time when consumers might expect higher energy costs due to increased natural gas usage during colder weather, Elizabethtown Gas today announced it will pass along $10 million in cost savings to its customers.

Starting during the January 2015 billing cycle, Elizabethtown Gas will begin issuing refunds to residential and small commercial customers due to an adjustment in the basic gas supply service (BGSS) rate, which reflects the costs of natural gas supplies. As a result of the rate adjustment, a typical residential customer who uses 1,000 therms annually will receive a one-time bill credit of approximately $40.

Elizabethtown Gas purchases gas supplies for its customers without markup and recovers the costs it incurs through the BGSS rate.

“This refund is a result of lower than anticipated gas costs due in part to new supplies of domestically produced natural gas, which have resulted in declining prices over time,” said Brian MacLean, president of Elizabethtown Gas.  “We are pleased to pass along the additional cost savings to our customers.”

The refunds are in addition to a reduction in the natural gas supply rate that, beginning Oct. 1, 2014, lowered customers’ bills by approximately 10 percent. “Natural gas remains the most affordable and competitively priced energy source for homes and businesses in New Jersey,” MacLean said.

Elizabethtown Gas also is reminding customers of programs they can take advantage of now to help manage their energy costs:

• The Elizabethtown Gas Budget Plan is a bill management program that minimizes the "peaks and valleys" in bills by allowing customers to pay the same amount every month for a 12-month period.

• Customers also can take advantage of a variety of incentives through the energySMART program, including rebates up to $1,450 on the purchase and installation of high-efficiency equipment.
