Elizabethtown Gas Supports Extension of Enrollment Period for Home Energy Assistance Program

UNION, NJ. – April 28, 2014 – Elizabethtown Gas applauds the recent extension of a federally funded energy assistance program that will help more families and individuals manage their energy costs after one of the harshest winters on record. The application deadline for home heating and emergency crisis assistance under the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, has been extended to June 30.

Elizabethtown Gas is reminding qualified customers to apply as soon as possible to take advantage of the limited energy assistance funds. The deadline for LIHEAP applications is typically April 30 each year, but has been extended due to the recent harsh, prolonged winter that resulted in consumers using more energy to meet their heating needs.

LIHEAP, which is administered in New Jersey by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, provides an annual one-time grant to assist eligible households with financial relief. Eligibility is based on several factors, including income, fuel type and the region of the state in which applicants reside.  The state’s income guidelines require applicants to be at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level, meaning that the monthly income for a family of four cannot exceed $3,925. The grants range between $67 and $556.

Customers, who have been approved for LIHEAP and have a shut-off notice or whose service has been disconnected, are eligible to receive emergency crisis benefits of up to $450.

Approximately 11,000 Elizabethtown Gas customers have received LIHEAP assistance to date during the 2013-2014 winter heating season.

“We applaud the state for taking this important step in extending the LIHEAP enrollment period program an additional two months,” said Brian MacLean, vice president of Elizabethtown Gas.  “Because of the bitterly cold winter, more of our customers have received assistance from programs, like LIHEAP.  This extension will allow more customers who have not yet applied for the financial assistance program to receive help in paying their winter energy costs.”

Customers also can take advantage of several other programs to help manage their energy costs, including enrolling in the Budget Payment Plan, a bill management program that minimizes the "peaks and valleys" in their bills by allowing customers to pay an amount evenly distributed over a 12-month period. They also can sign up for My Account online, which analyzes energy use and compares past and present usage.
