Elizabethtown Gas customers to benefit from lower natural gas costs

UNION, NJ – Sept. 28, 2015 – It’s going to be more affordable for Elizabethtown Gas customers this winter.
Starting on Oct. 1, the traditional start of the winter heating season, a new natural gas supply rate will take effect, which is expected to lower natural gas bills by approximately 8.4 percent. Based on the new Basic Gas Supply Services (BGSS) rate, the average monthly bill (including the base charge) of a residential heating customer who uses 100 therms of gas per month would be lowered from $99.94 to $91.52.

Additionally, customers will receive a one-time credit, starting with bills issued in October. Although the refunds, which total $6.9 million, will vary depending on customers’ use of natural gas over a 12-month period, a typical residential customer will receive approximately $14 inclusive of taxes.

This refund is the result of an adjustment to the Clean Energy Program (CEP) rate.  The CEP is included in the Consolidated Adjustment Charge (CAC) on the bill. The amount will be shown separately as a Customer Refund on a customer’s bill.

Previously Elizabethtown Gas issued $20 million in adjustments in the BGSS rate, due to lower costs of natural gas supplies.

Elizabethtown Gas is helping customers prepare for the heating season by encouraging them to take advantage of the following programs that can provide assistance with managing energy costs and natural gas use:

  • Enrolling in the Elizabethtown Gas Budget Payment Plan provides a convenient way for customers to pay their natural gas bills, making household budgeting much easier. The bill management program plan minimizes the "peaks and valleys" in their bills by allowing customers to pay an amount evenly distributed over a 12-month period.
  • The energySMART program offers ideas and rebates to help customers save energy and money. The program provides the education, resources and financial rebates to make homes and businesses more energy efficient. Customers also can take advantage of a variety of incentives through the energySMART program, including rebates up to $1,450 on the purchase and installation of high-efficiency equipment.

  • Customers also can analyze energy use and compare it to past and present usage by signing up for My Account online.
