Elizabethtown Gas To Lower Gas Costs For 5th Consecutive Year

UNION, NJ – June 1, 2015 – Elizabethtown Gas is committed to keeping costs low, and as part of its efforts to provide more cost-saving benefits to customers, the company is proposing to lower its gas costs for the fifth  consecutive year.

Elizabethtown Gas has filed with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) a plan to reduce the Basic Gas Supply Service (BGSS) rate for residential and small commercial customers by $0.0842 per therm. That means a household that annually uses 1,000 therms for natural gas appliances for heating, water heating, cooking and clothes drying would spend $931.20, compared to $1,015.40 during the same period last year.

On a monthly basis, customers who use 100 therms to meet their energy needs would spend $8.42 less on their natural gas bills, from $99.94 to $91.52.

The BGSS rate is designed to recover the cost of natural gas supplies Elizabethtown Gas purchases for its customers. The company passes along those costs dollar-for dollar without any markup or profit. The rate is adjusted periodically to reflect increases or decreases in the wholesale price of natural gas.

The company has requested the BPU to approve the lower rate effective October 1, 2015 – just in time for the winter heating season.

The proposed rate reduction comes in addition to Elizabethtown Gas’ refunds of $20 million to its customers earlier this year as a result of lower-than-anticipated gas costs due in part to new supplies of domestically produced natural gas.

Additionally the company’s asset manager, Sequent Energy Management, has steadily provided value to customers, through cost-effective natural gas purchasing and supply management strategies.

“Our efforts to provide cost savings to our customers will save them more than $18 million compared to last year,” said Brian MacLean, president of Elizabethtown Gas.  “We are pleased to pass these cost savings to our customers.”
