Elizabethtown Gas customers to benefit from refund

UNION, NJ – Jan. 7, 2016 – Elizabethtown Gas customers have one more reason to be happy that it’s a new year, thanks to a refund of a portion of their natural gas costs.

The total refund, approximately $6 million, will be shared among residential and small commercial customers and will be applied to January bills. The one-time refund is based on the amount of natural gas used during the 12-month period that ended Sept. 30, 2015; a typical residential heating customer who used 1,000 therms will save approximately $26.

“While natural gas prices typically increase during the coldest months of the year due to supply and demand, the overall prices for the commodity have remained historically low,” said Brian MacLean, president of Elizabethtown Gas. “We are pleased to pass along additional cost savings to our customers.”

Elizabethtown Gas recovers costs for purchasing natural gas supplies for its customers through the basic gas supply service (BGSS) rate. This rate makes up the majority of a customer’s bill and is adjusted periodically to reflect increases or decreases in the wholesale price of natural gas. Because the company projected higher prices for natural gas supplies than it paid, customers will receive a refund.

Since January 2015, Elizabethtown Gas has provided four BGSS refunds, totaling more than $34 million in cost savings to customers.

With winter weather in full effect, Elizabethtown Gas encourages customers to take advantage of the company’s energy efficiency program, energySMART, which can help them better understand and gain control of how much energy they use, as well as demonstrate where they may find potential energy savings in their home or business. In addition, the program offers rebates that, when combined with offers from New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program, can provide up to $1,450 in rebates on the purchase and installation of energy-efficiency equipment.
