Energy assistance programs available to help manage energy bills

UNION, NJ – March 10, 2016 – Despite experiencing one of the mildest winters on record, Elizabethtown Gas is reminding customers of opportunities to manage their energy costs. The company is encouraging its customers to take advantage of the following energy assistance programs:

  • Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps eligible customers meet their energy needs by helping to pay their winter heating bills. The LIHEAP enrollment period ends on April 30, 2016. The program has an emergency crisis benefit component, which accepts applications from March 16, 2016 through May 31, 2016. For more information on how to qualify for LIHEAP or to locate an application agency in their area, residents should dial 2-1-1 or call 800.510.3102. Those who call 2-1-1 also may request a referral to one of the many other state and local energy assistance programs that are available.
  • Temporary Relief for Utility Expenses (TRUE) grant program, a one-time benefit of up to $750 for moderate income households experiencing a temporary financial crisis, is available to eligible utility customers. The TRUE application also is an application for the Payment Assistance for Gas & Electric (PAGE) program, which provides a one-time grant of up to $700 for natural gas customers. Both programs are administered by the Affordable Housing Alliance and are intended for residents not eligible for other programs, such as LIHEAP or Universal Service Fund (USF).
  • Warm Neighbors is a supplemental program consisting of voluntary contributions from Elizabethtown Gas customers. The program provides an annual grant of up to $450, which will be distributed to qualified residential customers year-round based on availability of funding. To qualify, a household must have monthly income within 201 to 400 percent of the federally established poverty level and a customer must have made a payment of at least $100 within 60 days of his or her application. Customers who are facing a crisis situation also can apply for the benefit. For more information about Warm Neighbors, visit www.elizabethtowngas.com or contact your local intake agency.

The following resources also are available to help manage heating costs:

  • The energySMART program offers ideas and incentives to help customers save energy and money. Combined with offers from New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program, energySMART can provide up to $1,450 in rebates on the purchase and installation of high-efficiency natural gas equipment, such as furnaces, boilers and water heaters. The company also has an online account management tool called My Account that analyzes customers’ energy use and compares past and present usage.
