Elizabethtown Gas Reminds Customers in Need to Apply for Heating Bill Assistance

UNION, N.J. – April 6, 2017 – Last year, Elizabethtown Gas customers received more than $5 million in financial assistance to help manage their energy costs. Although residents experienced one of the warmest winter heating seasons on record, the need still is great for energy assistance programs to help struggling residents.

Elizabethtown Gas is reminding customers that the deadline has been extended for one of those vital programs: Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). State intake agencies now are accepting applications through May 31, 2017.

The company is encouraging qualifying customers to take advantage of the following energy assistance programs:

  • Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps eligible customers meet their energy needs by helping to pay their winter heating bills. The deadline for LIHEAP enrollment was extended from April 30, 2017 to May 31, 2017. The program has an emergency crisis benefit component, which also is accepting applications through May 31, 2017. Customers who already have received a LIHEAP benefit this heating season may be eligible to receive up to $450. For more information on how to qualify for LIHEAP or to locate an application agency in their area, residents should dial 2-1-1 or call 1-800-510-3102. Those who call 2-1-1 also may request a referral to one of the many other state and local energy assistance programs that are available.
  • Temporary Relief for Utility Expenses (TRUE) grant program, a one-time benefit of up to $750 for moderate income households experiencing a temporary financial crisis, is available to eligible utility customers. Completion of the TRUE application automatically applies eligible customers for the Payment Assistance for Gas & Electric (PAGE) program, which provides a one-time grant of up to $700 for natural gas customers. Both programs are administered by the Affordable Housing Alliance and are intended for residents not eligible for other programs, such as LIHEAP or Universal Service Fund (USF).
  • Warm Neighbors is a supplemental program consisting of voluntary contributions from Elizabethtown Gas customers. The program provides an annual grant of up to $450, which will be distributed to qualified residential customers year-round based on availability of funding. To qualify, a household must have monthly income within 201 to 400 percent of the federally established poverty level and a customer must have made a payment of at least $100 within 60 days of his or her application. Customers who are facing a crisis situation also can apply for the benefit. For more information about Warm Neighbors, visit www.elizabethtowngas.com or contact your local intake agency.
