Elizabethtown Gas Urges Customers to Prepare for Winter Heating Season, Take Advantage of Special Programs to Manage Heating Costs and Conserve Energy

UNION, N.J. – Oct. 9, 2017 – October is the traditional start of the winter heating season when residents are encouraged to take all the necessary steps to prepare for the colder months ahead. Keeping themselves and their families warm is not as simple as turning a knob or pressing buttons on a thermostat, however. When temperatures drop, some household budgets cannot keep up with the demands of using more natural gas to heat their homes.

Elizabethtown Gas wants to help customers better prepare for winter heating season by providing the following tools, services, and solutions that can customers peace of mind when managing winter heating bills:

  • Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps eligible customers meet their energy needs by helping to pay their winter heating bills. The application period started on Oct. 1, 2017, and continues through April 30, 2018. Eligibility is based on several factors, including fuel type, region of the state that you reside in and income. The state’s income guidelines are based on 200 percent of the federal poverty level. A LIHEAP application also can be used to apply for the Universal Service Fund Program (USF), a program created by the state to help make natural gas and electric bills more affordable for low-income households.   • Warm Neighbors is a supplemental program made up of voluntary contributions from Elizabethtown Gas customers. Residential customers whose annual household income is within 201 to 400 percent of the federally established poverty level can receive a one-time annual grant up to $450, with no requirement to be paid back. Customers who do not meet income guidelines and are in crisis may be eligible to receive a grant.  Veterans who receive LIHEAP can receive a supplemental grant of $200.  To qualify, customers must have made a good faith payment to Elizabethtown Gas of $50 in the last 60 days.  For more information about Warm Neighbors, visit www.elizabethtowngas.com or your local intake agency.
  • The program provides a one-time annual grant of up to $450 that will be distributed to qualified residential customers year-round based on availability of funding. To qualify, a household must have monthly income within 201 to 400 percent of the federally established poverty level, and a customer must have made a payment of at least $100 within 60 days of their application.   • The Payment Assistance for Gas & Electric (PAGE) grant program provides a one-time grant of up to $700 for moderate income households experiencing a temporary financial crisis to eligible utility customers. Eligible customers may receive a grant on both their gas and electric accounts totaling up to $1,400 per year. This program is administered by the Affordable Housing Alliance and is intended for those residents not eligible for other programs (e.g. LIHEAP or USF) during the current enrollment period.  Visit NJPoweron.org for more information or for an application.

The following resources are available to help manage heating costs and conserve energy:

  • The Elizabethtown Gas Budget Plan is a bill management program that provides a convenient way for customers to pay their natural gas bills, making household budgeting easier. The plan minimizes the "peaks and valleys" in natural gas bills by allowing customers to pay a consistent amount every month for a 12-month period. Customers interested in enrolling in the budget plan should visit elizabethtowngas.com or call the Customer Care Center at 800.242.5830.
  • The energySMART program offers ideas and tools to help customers save energy and money. The program offers include home energy assessments, home weatherization for income-qualified customers and high-efficency equipment rebates, that combined with offers from New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program can provide up to $1,400 in rebates.
