Elizabethtown Gas to Pass $10.9 Million Savings from Federal Tax Reform Law to Customers

UNION, N.J. – April 12, 2018 – The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has approved a reduction of Elizabethtown Gas’ distribution rates totaling $10.9 million, effective April 1. The reduction stems from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which lowered Elizabethtown Gas’ annual tax expense – a savings Elizabethtown Gas’ firm natural gas customers in New Jersey will benefit from.

“Every customer deserves reliable energy at a price they can afford,” said Brian MacLean, president of Elizabethtown Gas. “The benefits of the new tax law will lower costs for the company, which we are pleased to share with our customers.”

Elizabethtown Gas filed the rate reduction with the BPU to recognize the benefits of the federal tax reform law, including the lowering of the federal corporate income tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent. Elizabethtown Gas’ firm customers will benefit from the $10.9 million decrease; an average residential customer using 100 therms per month will see a bill decrease of approximately $3.37.

Later this year, Elizabethtown Gas will issue a one-time lump sum refund for firm customers’, including residential, commercial and industrial, usages during the period Jan. 1 through March 31, inclusive of interest, as directed by the BPU. The refund is to account for the time between when the federal tax reform law took effect, Jan. 1, and when the BPU-approved rate reduction became effective.
