Last August, our region set the record in heat. And earlier this month, the combination of heat and humidity pushed the heat index to nearly 109. During this last full month of summer, you want to stay cool and comfortable. But you can still conserve energy and reduce utility costs with a few quick modifications around the house.
- Adjust your thermostat: According to Energy Star,® a program of the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Energy, thermostats should be kept at 78 degrees Fahrenheit when home during the day to reduce energy use.
- Replace air conditioner filters – monthly: A dirty air filter makes your cooling unit work harder than it needs to. Be sure to add “replace air filters” to your monthly household to-do list to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs.
- Close those shades: By drawing your blinds in the afternoon, you can prevent additional heat mid-day when the sun is the strongest. Or consider window treatments and coverings that can improve energy efficiency in your home and seal any leaks around doors and windows.
- Skip the oven: Grilling is a great way to save money and energy during the summer months. Or prepare a favorite no-cook summer meal when those temperatures get too high.
- Turn out the lights! A simple way to save money and reduce your electricity use this summer is to use natural lighting to light up rooms during the day. Work from home? Consider moving your desk or workspace near the window and enjoy the natural sunlight.
