Trick or Treat!

Trick or Treat!

Are you ready to treat yourself to a few tricks that can save energy and reduce costs this Halloween? Many of us love to go all out for the spooky holiday with lights, décor, music and more. But this can have an impact on your monthly energy use and utility costs.

The good news? You can still host a fabulous fright night while conserving energy with these efficient tips. The even better news? Perhaps you can splurge on full size candy bars for your trick or treaters with the additional savings.

  • Stop an energy vampire in its tracks by unplugging devices and appliances when they aren’t in use. These energy suckers can increase as much as 20% of your monthly electricity bill.
  • Switch to LED lights for your Halloween decorations. Or consider battery-powered candles or solar lighting to keep the path to your door well-lit for trick or treaters. These options go a long way when it comes to energy efficiency and cost savings.
  • Skip the inflatables. These seasonal fixtures are fun, but they can significantly impact your utility bill. Swap out inflatables for decorations that don’t require energy like homemade scarecrows, giant spiders, skeletons and more. Check out these clever and creative DIY outdoor Halloween decorations from Better Homes & Gardens to add some seasonal spookiness to your home.
  • Don’t forget to power down and unplug any electric-powered decorations during the day and before heading to bed at night to save on energy use as well.

And last, but certainly not least – avoid using burning candles to light your jack-o’-lantern. While it CAN save energy, it’s best to choose a battery powered light to avoid a potential fire hazard.
