Be Prepared for Summer Heat

High temperatures can put additional strain on your home’s systems, including natural gas appliances. Be sure to use appliances wisely: set thermostats to a safe, comfortable level and avoid overusing gas appliances during the hottest parts of the day. Follow these additional tips for a safe and enjoyable summer season.

Stay Cool & Conserve Energy During Peak Hours:

  • Use ceiling or portable fans to help circulate cool air throughout your home.
  • Close blinds or curtains during the day to block out heat from the sun.
  • If you're away from home, set your thermostat to a higher temperature—there's no need to cool an empty house.
  • Consider a smart thermostat to help you set schedules and control your home’s temperature from your smart phone. Check the Elizabethtown Gas Marketplace for instant rebates and get free installation after purchase when you schedule a Whole Home Energy Assessment
  • Seal cracks and gaps around doors and windows to keep cool air in and hot air out.
  • Replace air filters monthly. Dirty filters make your cooling system work harder.
  • Run appliances like dryers and ovens during cooler hours.
  • Wash dishes and laundry using cold water whenever possible.
  • Cook smart:
    • Use stoves and ovens early in the morning or late in the evening.
    • Opt for microwaves or slow cookers to minimize added heat.
    • Keep the heat outside by grilling outdoors.

Grilling Safety:

  • Always use gas grills outdoors and away from buildings, deck railings, overhanging branches, and other flammable materials.
  • Check hoses and gas connections for leaks before using the grill.
  • Clean cooking surfaces before grilling.
  • Never light a grill with the lid closed. Ensure burner controls are set to low or medium before lighting.
  • Never leave your grill unattended while in use.
  • Keep your face and hair away from burners when igniting.
  • Have a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case.
  • Keep children and pets at a safe distance from the grill.

Keep Natural Gas Meters Clear:

  • Keep a clear path around your gas meter - trim back any shrubs, tall grass, or vegetation.
  • Ensure the meter is always visible and accessible in case of emergencies or routine maintenance.

Appliance Maintenance:

  • Change the filter in your Central Air System – dirty air filters restrict air flow and can make your entire cooling system less efficient. Change them monthly for maximum benefit.
  • Summer is a great time to schedule maintenance for your natural gas appliances.
  • Have your water heater, stove, dryer, and other gas appliances inspected to ensure they are operating safely and efficiently.
  • If you use a natural gas generator of backup power source, test it before peak summer to ensure it’s working properly.
