Heating assistance programs available for eligible households

UNION, NJ — With October being the start of the winter heating season, Elizabethtown Gas is encouraging consumers to take advantage of programs available to manage their natural gas bills.
Starting Oct. 1, federal energy assistance funds are available to New Jersey residents under LIHEAP or the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Administered through the state Department of Community Affairs, the program is designed to help reduce monthly heating costs by providing a benefit to low- and fixed-income residents, including senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
“LIHEAP can provide vital financial support to families struggling to heat their homes and make ends meet during tough economic times,” said Brian MacLean, vice president, Elizabethtown Gas. “Last year, more than 386,000 households in New Jersey received LIHEAP financial assistance, and our goal is to inform eligible participants that there are programs like this to help them manage their heating bills.”
To qualify for LIHEAP heating assistance, a household’s monthly income cannot exceed 200 percent of the federal poverty level, or approximately $44,700 for a household of four.
For more information about LIHEAP or to locate an application agency in their area, residents can dial 2-1-1 or call 1-800-510-3102. Those who call 2-1-1 also may request a referral to one of the many other state and local energy assistance programs that are available.
Elizabethtown Gas customers can donate funds at any time during the year to NJ SHARES, a supplemental program that helps those who did not qualify for other heating assistance programs. Funds are provided by voluntary donations by customers, with a portion matched by Elizabethtown Gas.  To donate, Elizabethtown Gas customers should simply add $1, $2, $5, $10, $15 or $20 to their monthly bill payment.
To apply for NJ SHARES, call the toll free energy assistance hotline 1-866-NJSHARES.
Elizabethtown Gas customers can also call our customer care center at 1-800-242-5830 to put a payment plan in place through our Budget Payment Plan program. With the Budget Payment Plan, customers are billed the same amount every month for the next 12 months. The plan minimizes the "peaks and valleys" in their natural gas bill caused by winter's cold and summer's heat, making household budgeting much easier.
