Winter is Coming!

Winter is Coming!

Winter is expected to make a big comeback this season in the New Jersey region. Now is the  time to start preparations to keep the cold air outside and the warm air inside.

With just a few easy steps, you can help avoid excessive energy costs and stay warm and cozy all season long without lowering your thermostat (although you can do that too!) or increasing your utility bills.

  1. Seal window gaps. Reducing air leakage into your home is a critical step in keeping your home warm this winter. Check for gaps around your windows and seal any cracks to block the cold air as much as possible. And don’t forget to replace old caulking when it starts to deteriorate.
  2. Purchase a draft guard. Prevent cold air from seeping in via doorways with a door draft stopper. They are inexpensive and also easy-to-make. Check out these recommendations.
  3. Schedule a free home energy assessment. Do you need more insulation throughout your home? One good way to determine this is with an energy assessment. Find out what needs to be fixed, upgraded or replaced, while discovering a few simple things you can do on your own to save energy. Learn more about ETG’s free home energy assessment.
  4. Check your fireplace. Make sure the damper on your fireplaced is closed when it is not in use to help conserve heat. For more tips on maximizing your fireplace and chimney efficiency, visit Energy.gov.
  5. Layer up! Layering clothes is an effective, easy and inexpensive way to stay cozy indoors. Or grab an extra blanket and cozy up by the fire with a cup of hot tea.
